Patients Potentially Exposed to Hepatitis and HIV
Representing Endoscopy Center of Southern Nevada Patients
Authorities in southern Nevada have begun to notify approximately 40,000 patients who received anesthesia injections at the Endoscopy Center of Southern Nevada between March 2004 and January 11, 2008 about potential exposure to hepatitis and HIV. After six people were diagnosed with acute cases of hepatitis C since January, which is three times higher than the yearly average for the Las Vegas region, the health district commenced an investigation. This investigation revealed that unsafe injection practices related to the administration of anesthesia medication might have exposed patients to the blood of other patients.
The unsafe injection practices cited in the investigation centers around the clinics reuse of syringes and single dose vials of anesthesia medication in colonoscopies and other gastrointestinal procedures. Health officials said that, "the Endoscopy Center of Southern Nevada is a high-volume gastrointestinal practice where colonoscopies are frequently performed. Reuse of syringes and vials at the facility was a "common practice" undertaken by everyone from doctors to technicians".
Patients Should be Tested Immediately
Patients who were treated at the Endoscopy Center of Southern Nevada are being urged to get tested for hepatitis C and B and HIV as soon as possible. Health officials also warned patients treated at the clinic to practice safe sex and use condoms.
